Roughly fifty vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German town of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were vandalized, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a statement.
Law enforcement report they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued fluid.
The substance had been placed in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.
Police then discovered many other marked automobiles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public display of Nazi symbols.
Officials report early analysis indicate the fluid was probably human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no lead as to its source; authorities are not yet aware of any injuries in connection with the event," they added.
City officials said they were trying "to unravel the case" and have asked to the public for tips.
A high-ranking representative commented the attack left him stunned and had to be resolved promptly.
"This act affects the center of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on social media, mentioning the killing of nine individuals by a shooter targeting people of immigrant origin in February 2020.
