Conservative reactions to the partial disclosure of documents related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in images, while others expressed frustration over how heavy censorship cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Administration Justifies Censorship with Fervent Rhetoric
Justice Department officials justified the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “At no point in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this transparent with the public about such a delicate legal issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo outlining the redaction procedure.
Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's name and image are visible in some of the materials, the widespread black blocks prompt significant concerns about what may be concealed beneath them. Some conservative lawmakers immediately called for increased transparency.
“The public are raging and walking away,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the redactions violate the law, and implied that a future Congress may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s document release egregiously fails to adhere to both the intent and the letter of the act,” he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Rally In Support of the Release
But, some conservative commentators and former President loyalists came out strongly in support of the administration.
The release—from a DOJ led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are completely censored, and numerous of the men shown in pictures have their identities obscured.
But some do not, featuring high-profile individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, enabled certain rightwing figures to go on the offensive.
“This is quite rich how the political left falsely accused President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“New documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Former President Campaign Releases Statement
Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been hiding these documents for an extended period only to release them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from information they will try and conceal forever. So they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photographs as they desire, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement added.
Broader Rightwing Comment Seems Subdued
Nonetheless, overall comment on the political right was relatively muted following the disclosure, especially when compared with the loud demands for action that came before the congressional approval to enact a bill requiring the files' publication.
Loomer, who recently secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a full release. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi specifically after a group of conservative personalities were provided physical folders of files that included little previously unseen information.
